U.S. judge halts oil leases due to lack of federal study of water impacts

WASHINGTON, May 1 (Reuters) – A U.S. judge on Friday halted nearly 300 oil and gas leases on a large section of federal land in Montana that had been approved by an agency of the Interior Department and ordered the agency to conduct a thorough environmental analysis of the impact of fracking on drinking water.

District Court Judge Brian Morris said in his ruling that the Bureau of Land Management … [more…]

Rashes, urinary tract infections, and kidney stones requiring hospital stays are more common in areas with more drilling, according to a new study

Fracking may put Pennsylvania communities at greater risk for skin, genital, and urinary diseases, according to new research.

The study, which will be published in the March issue of the journal Public Health, looked at hospital records in Pennsylvania’s 67 counties from 2003–2014.

Intensification of the water footprint of hydraulic fracturing

Map of water stress and shale plays; hydraulic fracturing

Abstract

Unconventional oil and gas exploration in the United States has experienced a period of rapid growth, followed by several years of limited production due to falling and low natural gas and oil prices. Throughout this transition, the water use for hydraulic fracturing and wastewater production in major shale gas and oil production regions has increased; from 2011 to 2016, the water use per well increased up to 770%, while … [more…]
